In Thailand, Phonics has been applied in order to help their young learners (Grade 1-3) achieve the standards of learning English, which incorporate the knowledge of letters and sounds, pronouncing and spelling words and reading simple sentences accurately according to the B.E. 2551 Basic Education Core Curriculum of Thailand (A.D.2008) by the number of ELT primary school teachers, including this group of teachers in the north-eastern region. They have worked together as a teacher learning community (TLC) and learned that Phonics instruction, with an emphasis of Phonemic Awareness (The ability to hear and manipulate the sounds in spoken words and the understanding that spoken words and syllables are made up of sequences of speech sounds (Yopp, 1992) is the key to enhance literacy foundations for young English learners. In this workshop, both best practices and difficulties will be collaboratively shared by a few members from the TLC.
